This one mixed in some watercolor as the base and then build lightly upon in layers. Last one that is one larger watercolor paper. Only a week left of this project! AMAZING!!

Going back to collage is easy to just freshen things up. Collage is quick and one of my favorite things about it is that there are shapes and patterns already there that you have to work with. It's a great flexible structure to just kind of get things jostled up a bit. I also found my wasabi tape (is that what it's called?) and the patterns are so fun - you can see the blue/white and red/white and yellow tape.

This one is fun cause I liked the palette paper that I was working with and loved the design that came from it over the past week. I wish I had taken a proper picture to show the difference but I just ripped it in 2 and started with this design and painted into it. It was great fun!

I painted this one and Day 83 at the same time after my Dad passed on previous Saturday (6/27). I feel like these remind me of him. He always had major heart issues all of his life which was the final cause of his death. BUT, we always joked and noted how ironic it was that he of all people should have heart issues when he has the biggest heart of anyone we knew. He was so sweet, generous and kind, always thinking and worrying about you, your life, loved ones. Supported my mom whole-heartedly (no pun intended!) and these I painted together in tandem, seemed to “explode” with “red” bursts of heart energy. I pulled back and realized how lovely it seemed to be reminded of his presence, for me, in these paintings.

Been keeping up with artwork past couple days but my dad passed away this weekend on Saturday. I’ll write a post about it later. But trying to just post to catch up so I can be on time for the 100th one.

Been keeping up with artwork past couple days but my dad passed away this weekend on Saturday. I'll write a post about it later. It's been nice to keep up with art but death in someone's life is always weird when you have to go back to the normal, mundane, routine things in your life .  . . just without them. All reminders that life goes on but he will be sorely missed.

Playing catch up with my posts but not the artwork. Completely on time now! Feels good.

Going larger still means painting within 20 minutes which is harder because there a lot of water I use and I can't dry it in a lot of layers. So again, slightly different strategy - cannot fill entire paper and wait for everything to dry. And a lot more "wet-in-wet" painting/drawing which is fine too. I prefer to go fast so this method has been very successful for me - paint within the 20 minute limit.

Actually was on time with this one and forgot to post on Saturday. Playing catch up yesterday and today but that's ok!

Decided to work larger so these are 24x18 sheets of paper. Just even going twice as large is different. Think this next several larger works will be interesting because you tend to fill the entire paper (almost to get a feel for your perimeters) and then start to make more strategic decisions working with negative space etc. At least that is what I've been noticing with this series whenever the size changes a bit. It's completely unconscious but I can see it happening in the previous 75.

Almost done! 25 more days left for 100 Day Project!

Day 75 - It's so fun to look back to see what has been painted, so many different looks yet similar styling and decision-making. I'm liking the direction now, it got a little stale right before leaving for my Colorado trip to visit my sister and niece. I think I was mentally waiting for that challenge to have a change.

But who knows what the next 25 will bring! That's what's so exciting.

For those of you who keep asking, I'm offering these original paintings from this series priced from $25-$45 (depending on piece because of size/material). If you are interested in purchasing one of these original sketches, please email me katy[at]kathrynneale.com and I will be happy to quote the price. All artwork includes free shipping. If the original has been sold, all pieces are available as high quality art prints ($10.00/8x10) - pricing is limited time only. Thank you!

Did it!!! FINALLY caught up officially! This is the 75th day and wow, looking back it's amazing to see how much has changed and what's been fun to experiment with. I've definitely tried to keep it "light" and not make that much demands on myself. If I did, it wouldn't have happened because it would've been too much pressure. But this is the final push through July to finish which is definitely possible now that I am all caught up. And like I anticipated, just visiting a new place gives such fresh inspiration.

For the past week, it's been like Seattle here (well I hear Seattle is experiencing record-breaking draught!) but raining consistently every day for like 10 days. I think in the lastest couple pieces, that delicate, watery, light, neutral feel crept into my paintings. Haven't seen the sun really since the day after coming back from Colorado. Frustrating cause these are the longest days of the year! Last year we were having a great time at the golf course with our little guy, being outside during weeknights even felt like a treat. Ah well. I'm sure the sun and hot is around the corner . . . it's St. Louis for pete's sake!!

Ran out of those canvas boards so now back to paper and you can see/feel the difference. The paint "sticks" and "grabs" more, not gliding on the surface like on the canvas boards. And it's a different look too or can be. I like the randomness of the blue dripping/dropping but with more intention then some of the earlier pieces of this entire series where it was really random. Still kind of abstracting the "landscape" feel that is so dramatic when you think of Colorado. The landscape can't help but completely shape your mental psyche and leaves its mark, even in memory.
